Concrete Sidewalks
Walkways, paths and ADA-compliant public sidewalks — across Charlotte, Gastonia and 30 miles around.
Concrete Sidewalks in Charlotte & Gaston County
Sidewalks take more abuse than almost any concrete on a property — foot traffic, tree roots, freeze-thaw cycles, lawn equipment and stormwater all working on the same four-inch slab. We build residential walkways, commercial sidewalks, ADA-compliant public paths, and connecting paths between driveways, porches and outdoor living areas throughout Charlotte and Gaston County.
Why most sidewalks fail early
Almost every prematurely cracked sidewalk we replace failed for one of three reasons, and none of them is the concrete itself.
The first is base preparation. A slab poured onto loose fill or uncompacted soil will settle unevenly, and concrete has very little tolerance for being unsupported in the middle. The second is joint spacing. Concrete shrinks as it cures — that is not a defect, it is physics — and if you do not give it planned locations to crack, it will pick its own. Control joints should generally be spaced at roughly 24 to 30 times the slab thickness, which for a standard four-inch walk means every eight to ten feet. The third is thickness, where a walk gets poured at three inches to save on material and then has a lawn tractor driven across it.
We build to eliminate all three. Compacted base, correct thickness for the actual expected load, and joints cut at the right spacing and at the right time — within the first day, before shrinkage stress has anywhere else to go.
Drainage and slope done right
A sidewalk is a small dam if you build it wrong. Get the cross-slope backwards and you channel stormwater toward a foundation instead of away from it. Build it dead flat and water sits on the surface, works into the pores, and then freezes and expands during a Carolina cold snap — which is exactly how surface scaling and spalling start.
Standard practice is around a quarter inch of fall per foot across the width of the walk, directed away from the structure. We set that with the forms and verify it before the pour, because it is essentially impossible to correct once concrete is down.
Working around mature trees
Charlotte has beautiful old oaks and willow oaks, and their roots are the single most common cause of heaved, lifted sidewalk panels in older neighborhoods. Simply pouring a new walk over the same roots gets you the same problem again in a few years.
Depending on the situation we will reroute the path slightly, install a root barrier, thicken and reinforce the affected panels, or bridge the root zone. We also avoid cutting major structural roots wherever possible — the goal is a walk that lasts and a tree that survives, not one at the expense of the other.
ADA and commercial requirements
Public and commercial sidewalks carry accessibility requirements that are easy to get wrong and expensive to redo. Running slope, cross-slope limits, landing dimensions at doors and ramps, maximum vertical change between panels, and detectable warning surfaces at curb ramps all have specific tolerances.
We build commercial sidewalk work to those standards and document the finished grades. For property managers and business owners, that means an installation that passes inspection and does not create a trip-hazard liability the first time a panel settles.
Every concrete sidewalks project covers
- Residential front walks, side paths and garden connections
- Commercial and municipal sidewalks built to specification
- ADA-compliant slopes, landings and detectable warning panels
- Broom, smooth-trowel and decorative stamped finishes
- Root barriers and reinforcement near mature trees
- Proper cross-slope so water sheds instead of ponding
- Correctly spaced control and expansion joints
- Demolition and haul-away of old, failed sidewalk
Four steps from first call to final cure
Walk & Measure
We walk the route with you, check grades and drainage, flag utilities, and agree on width, finish and where the path should actually go rather than where it happens to be now.
Demo & Sub-base
Old concrete comes out and gets hauled away. The sub-grade is graded and compacted, and a gravel base is added so the new walk has uniform support along its whole length.
Form, Reinforce & Pour
Forms are set to establish slope and line, reinforcement goes in where it is needed, then concrete is placed at a consistent thickness across the full run.
Finish, Joint & Cure
We finish to your chosen texture, tool the edges, cut control joints at correct spacing, and cure the slab so it gains strength properly before it takes traffic.
What a careful job actually buys you
Concrete is the cheapest part of a concrete job. The base, the steel, the drainage and the cure are what decide how long it lasts.
Built to Last
Correct thickness, compacted base and real reinforcement — the three things that decide whether concrete lasts 30 years or 6.
Water Managed
Correct fall on every slab and drainage behind every wall, so stormwater leaves instead of working into the concrete.
Code Compliant
Built to pass inspection first time — right depth, right steel, right cover, documented and ready when the inspector arrives.
Cured Properly
Protected against Carolina heat and cold so the concrete actually reaches the strength you paid for.
Five habits we do not skip
Premium results come from disciplined habits, not shortcuts. This is the standard we hold on every pour, no matter the size.
Straight Answers
Itemised scope, honest timelines, and a clear no if a repair beats a replacement.
Base Done Right
Excavated to depth, soft spots removed, crushed stone compacted in lifts — not dumped and levelled.
Steel on Chairs
Rebar set at the specified height with correct cover and lap lengths. Never hooked up mid-pour.
Joints On Schedule
Control joints at correct spacing, cut within the first day before shrinkage finds its own path.
Walkthrough & Care Plan
A final walkthrough plus written guidance on when to drive on it and when to seal it.
